Intuitive guidance can be invaluable when you're navigating career choices, relationships, or simply trying to maintain happiness. Oracle cards offer one way to access that inner knowing.

If you're new to oracle cards, don't worry—this overview will help you get comfortable with this tool and start receiving meaningful messages.

Oracle cards are an accessible entry point for opening your intuitive abilities and connecting with spiritual guides. As a divination tool, their themes vary widely depending on the deck's creator. Through symbols, colors, and words, the cards help you attune to higher states of consciousness so you can discern the best choices. You can use oracle readings for yourself, or to assist friends and clients.

Many people begin with oracle decks before exploring intuition further because they require less study than Tarot, which has structured groups of cards with specific meanings. You can pick up an oracle deck with little or no experience on its topic and still receive useful guidance. The more you practice different oracle spreads, the more confident you'll become in selecting the right one for each situation.

Types of Oracle Readings

When you draw a card, the insights you receive are shaped by the question you hold in your mind beforehand. So before trying a spread, it's important to know which kinds of questions are helpful. Generally, asking what will happen in the future or what someone else is thinking or doing isn't useful.

That's because such questions don't empower you to create a better outcome by shifting your energy in the present. This understanding develops over time, so if it doesn't yet make sense, keep practicing the questions below and you'll begin to see how you co-create with the Universe.

People typically seek clarity in three main areas during a reading. Here are sample questions you can use with the simple spreads below.

Love

  • What is blocking me in love?
  • How can I best open myself to new love?
  • What do I need to heal to improve my love life?
  • What does this person represent, or what are they here to teach me on my soul's path?
  • Is this relationship or person in alignment with my highest good?

Career

  • What do I need to know about my current career?
  • What can I do to expand my success?
  • How can I align with my soul purpose?
  • How can I heal to move forward with my career?

Health

  • What do I need to know about my energy?
  • How can I change my mind to help bring healing?
  • What is most affecting my health?
  • How can I improve my health?

Simple Oracle Spreads

These spreads use one to three cards and are just as powerful as more elaborate ones. Often, the clearer your question, the clearer the answer from the cards. Drawing more cards doesn't necessarily bring more clarity. Experienced readers still use simple spreads and often prefer them.

One-Card Draw for Daily Guidance

Ask: "What do I need to know about today?" Drawing a card each morning can strengthen your intuition. Request guidance to use your energy in the best possible way today with the card you pull. This intention helps focus your intuition rather than picking up fear-based insights.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Shuffle the deck until you feel you should stop, then take the top card.
  2. Alternatively, shuffle and fan the cards out. Let your hand hover over them and notice where your attention is subtly drawn without over-analyzing. Pick the card that seems to call to you.

Three-Card Decision Spread

This three-card spread helps you see what the energy of one option or another represents in your life. For example, if you're deciding between two colleges, one might bring great friendships while the other fosters discipline. Neither is inherently good or bad—each represents different experiences. This spread helps you intuitively sense the emotional opportunities in each so you can choose.

  1. Card 1 represents the situation you're asking about—e.g., going to college.
  2. Card 2 represents one of your choices, which you decide before pulling.
  3. Card 3 represents the energy of the other choice.

Your intuition helps you interpret how each experience would feel. Notice whether it feels light or heavy, constricting or expansive in your body as you look at the card. Notice the impressions that come to mind, because this spread can also reveal if your thinking is limited and help you see that it's not yet time to decide or that there are more options you haven't considered.

Past-Present-Future Three-Card Spread

This spread is useful as a general check-in for yourself or a friend. It can be a good starting point and help you find where to look deeper. If things are going well, it can show you your potential for expansion. You don't always need to solve a crisis when pulling cards. It's also a good ice-breaker to get your intuition flowing when giving a reading.

  1. Past: This represents a period you've gone through that likely influenced your current state. For some, it may be one major event; for others, a longer learning cycle.
  2. Present: This represents the energy you're currently in and where your mind is. It will usually feel accurate to your emotional state, though sometimes it helps you see what you may be ignoring.
  3. Current Future Projection: This shows where the energy is pointing, which can be shifted with intention and by taking responsibility for your thoughts to create different energy.

You can also use this spread to check in on a specific area such as love, career, or health. It's helpful because it empowers you to see how you're creating the energy in these areas and illuminates how you can shift it.

Larger Oracle Spreads

If you feel drawn to a slightly more complex spread, try this five-card one. There are many spreads, and you'll find what you're drawn to. The Celtic Cross, for example, is a ten-card spread that is more complex and often used in Tarot, though it may not give the straightforward advice of a simple card spread.

This five-card spread can help you dive deeper after an initial oracle reading. It can provide more insight into something you're struggling to accept or a challenging situation.

  1. Present: Where the situation currently stands energetically.
  2. Past: The energy that preceded or brought about this situation.
  3. Future: The current projection of this situation.
  4. Reason: A deeper spiritual look at why this is in your path.
  5. Potential: How this could inevitably bring growth or stagnation.

When pulling each card, writing down your impressions can help, since there are more cards. This helps you distill the message and keep track of impressions as you pull, so you can see the overall picture. Recording which cards you pull also allows you to return to the spread and reflect on it later.

Be Your Own Oracle

Some people have negative associations with Tarot cards and feel afraid when cards like Death or The Devil appear because of the words' connotations. While an experienced Tarot reader understands these cards aren't bad omens, someone new to readings may be spooked by the names themselves. To be sensitive to different people's associations with certain words—or even your own—it's perfectly fine to use oracle cards that resonate with you or the situation.

Oracle cards come in many themes, and you can intuitively choose the cards that call to you or that you feel will put someone else at ease. Because intuitive information comes when we're relaxed, oracle cards are a great way to bridge into the intuitive world. The artists often create warm, uplifting images that soothe the mind and lift our spirits.
