When a new relationship starts to bloom, many of us instinctively size up how well we mesh with the other person. We might compare personalities, swap notes on hobbies, or look for shared interests. But a lot of people also look to the stars for clues about how their energy will blend with someone else’s.

Astrology appeals to so many because it offers endless layers to explore—especially when it comes to compatibility. There are plenty of ways to use it for that purpose. Some people check their Chinese zodiac signs; others go straight to the Sun signs of themselves and their partner or crush, since that’s one of the fastest methods. Yet a Sun sign is influenced by many factors, and one of them is the element that rules it.

Every zodiac sign belongs to one of four elements: Air, Earth, Water, or Fire. Your elemental personality can say a lot about how you relate to others and how you handle love and relationships. Below, the signs are grouped by element—read on to see which element(s) might pair best with your own.

  • Air – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
  • Earth – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Water – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Fire – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Air

Air signs tend to pair best with other Air signs. They share a focus on intellect, enjoy socializing, and have a knack for analysis. Your communication skills will be noticed and valued by another Air sign, who appreciates your thoughtful way of engaging. Conversations with a fellow Air sign are unlikely to feel dull or distracted—you’re both quick-witted and eager to dive into deeper subjects.

Problem-solving comes naturally to Air signs, and when two of them team up, they can handle just about any challenge that arises. Your free-spirited sides encourage you to explore new territory together, and you’ll charm the new friends you meet along the way.

Earth

Earth signs are practical, responsible, pragmatic, and hardworking. That’s why they’re often best matched with another Earth sign who gets their logical approach to life. Earth signs are loyal but frequently reserved, revealing their deepest selves only to those closest to them. A relationship between two Earth signs tends to be built on a solid, grounded foundation filled with devotion and sensuality.

While both partners may dig in their heels at times, looking at things objectively usually helps you find a practical middle ground without much trouble. Your bond might even grow from a shared love of nature.

Water

Water represents fluidity and emotion, and those ruled by it are sensitive, complex, and creative. Water signs are best suited to the compassionate nature of another Water sign. You might assume two emotional signs would clash—and yes, feelings can sometimes be misread—but the ability you two have to communicate those feelings to each other is hard to overlook.

You know how to ride each other’s waves, so to speak, and you enjoy going with the flow together. The energy of two Water signs together also has the potential to amplify creativity within each of you.

Fire

Fire signs are passionate, feisty, and energetic. Your flames grow and thrive when they meet the burning passion of a fellow Fire sign. Together, you’ll enjoy adventures, embracing each other’s spontaneity and zest for life. Two Fire signs know how to keep the spark alive and have the confidence to do it. Things may get overheated now and then, but anger tends to fade almost as quickly as it flared up.

You’ll appreciate the direct nature of another Fire sign because it matches your own straightforward energy. The buoyant, energetic approach to life that each of you brings will lead to new and exciting experiences you share together.

Elemental Pattern

You’ll notice a pattern in elemental compatibility: elements tend to get along with their own kind. Air feels at home with Air; Water flows smoothly with Water; Earth appreciates the cooling, grounding energy of more Earth; and Fire feeds the passionate flames of other Fire signs.

That said, there’s no need to panic if your crush or partner doesn’t share your element. Astrological compatibility involves many factors, and the elements are only one of them. To truly understand how compatible you are with someone, you might consult an experienced astrologer and have them compare your charts in what’s called a synastry report.

Still, learning about the elements that rule our signs can help us understand ourselves and others better—and that’s a great place to start.
