If you have been following this palmistry series, you already have a foundation in what palmistry involves, what a reading might entail, and the main topographic features of the hand. Building on that groundwork, this installment turns to one of the art’s most informative components: the fleshy pads known as mounts.

As noted earlier, mounts are the padded areas distributed around the palm. Because the hand’s shape is so rich in these formations, examining their meanings offers a great deal to learn.

Below, we examine what each mount signifies and how interpretations of its physical traits may relate to different aspects of life.

Locating the Mounts on Your Palm

In every branch of palmistry, clearly seeing the definition of the area under study is essential.

Two quick hand positions will help you find each mount.

Begin with your palms facing upward. Stretch your fingers and palm flat, as though you were balancing a tray on your hand. This brings the finger mounts into view—the pads at the base of the index through little fingers—along with the Plane of Mars in the middle of the palm.

After examining that region, curve your palm as if cradling a piece of candy, with the thumb held snugly against the side of the hand. This position highlights the outer mounts, which run along the palm’s sides and the thumb. Since the fleshiness and shape of your hand may require switching between these two positions repeatedly during a reading, keep your arm and wrist comfortably supported while you analyze your palm.

Gods and Planets: Their Connection to the Hand

Like many other widely practiced forms of divination, palmistry spread largely through the Greco-Roman world. Because that culture defined everything by its deities, the fingers and mounts of the hand carry the names of various planets and celestial beings, and correspond to the qualities those ancient palm readers associated with each higher power—money, sex, power, and communication all had their patrons.

The primary mounts to know are:

Mount of Mercury

Situated at the base of the pinkie, this mount relates to communication style and wisdom. It reflects not only how you interact with others but also how you think.

Sun Mount

Found beneath the ring finger, the Sun Mount corresponds to ego, emotions, and interests. Its features mainly reveal personality.

Mount of Saturn

Beneath the middle finger lies the Mount of Saturn, which indicates your outlook on life and your integrity. If the Sun Mount represents outward expression, the Mount of Saturn represents inner process.

Mount of Jupiter

At the base of the index finger is the Mount of Jupiter, representing willpower, ambition, and self-respect. Because this is the most powerful finger, its mount carries substantial weight in palmistry.

Moon Mount

Along the base of the palm on the pinkie side sits the Moon Mount, associated with imagination and intuition. Given the depth of this mount, its link to equally deep personality traits is fitting.

Mount of Venus

The base of the thumb holds the Mount of Venus, the palm’s other deep mount, which relates to health, love, and sensuality.

Upper/Outer Mars Mount

Tucked between the Mounts of Jupiter and Venus on the inner palm, this Mars Mount relates to self-control and stamina.

Lower/Inner Mars Mount

On the outer palm between the Mercury and Moon Mounts, this area corresponds to courage and a sense of adventure.

Plane of Mars

The flat central area of the palm is the Plane of Mars, which ties into energy and abilities.

Traits to Look For

The first feature to assess is the mount’s depth or fleshiness, which supplies most of the information in this area. Evenly developed mounts suggest a strong, prominent personality; overly fleshy or overdeveloped mounts point to an excessive or inconsistent character; and flat or underdeveloped mounts indicate something missing from your life.

For instance, a Mount of Jupiter that is evenly raised would suggest ambition, honesty, and reliability. An overly fleshy mount in this area, by contrast, shows a tendency toward cockiness and pretentiousness, while a flat and bony Mount of Jupiter tells of a selfish nature and low drive to succeed.

Interpreting what your palms present takes time and practice, so invest a little energy in noticing small details that can expand your readings. Calluses, scars, freckles, and unique skin patterns all deserve consideration when you examine each mount.

Long, seemingly unbroken micro lines crossing your Mount of Venus would indicate a desire for deep commitment and long relationships, whereas short lines that appear to form a chain might signal a free spirit who wants to experience many short loves in life. A clearer sense of how you love and what you seek will make it easier to decide which relationships are worth pursuing and which may not be the right fit.

Calluses are literal hard shells protecting an area, so calluses on one or two mounts may indicate defensiveness or vulnerability in that area. A callus over your Mount of Mercury, for example, indicates an inability or reluctance to share when you communicate—something that can hinder personal and professional development.

Everything You Seek Is in Your Hands

If one lesson emerges from palmistry, it is that our history and our destiny truly rest in our own hands. By taking the time to perform a thorough palm reading, we can see a reflection of how we are shaping the world through our touch and strength. Recognizing the areas of power and opportunity we pass on to the world means we can change how we go through life, nurturing what needs to change and sharing what makes us special. Taking ownership of your personal growth is a powerful tool, and everything you need to begin that journey is right in the palm of your hand!
